Jamia Students' Hunger Strike For Restoration of Union Enters 4th Day, VC Refuses to Meet

While Jamia Millia Islamia, a central university in Delhi, is celebrating 97th foundation day, its students have been sitting on hunger strike for the past four days reiterating their demand for restoration of students' union.

For over a month, the students of the versity have been demanding that the administration must restore union elections -- banned since 2006 -- and declare a date for the polls.

"If the administration does not take swift action, hundereds of other of students would join the strike," a student said.

However, Vice Chancellor Talat Ahmad had earlier said the administration was unable to act according to the students demand as the matter was sub-judice.

"The legal hurdle can only be solved in the court by withdrawing the present petition by the petitioner as well as intervening group of students/applicants. Since the matter is sub judice any interim action on the part of the university or parties concerned will amount to contempt of court," the university had said in a statement.

The university once again reiterated that if the legal hurdle is over, it is ready to consider holding students' union election depending on the outcome of the case.
