Heavy Snowfall Throws Life Out of Gear in Kashmir

Heavy snowfall across Kashmir since Thursday night has brought life to a standstill in the valley. The Srinagar-Jammu national highway continues to remain closed, while poor visibility has led to cancellation of all flights at Srinagar airport.
At least three police personnel died and seven went missing after a massive avalanche near their post near Jawahar Tunnel in South Kashmir's Kulgam district on Thursday evening. The avalanche also blocked one of the tubes of the tunnel leading to disruption of vehicular movement.A person also died in South Kashmir's Kokernag area after his home came under a huge snow avalanche.
Many areas were reeling under darkness due to snapping of power supply to these areas. Besides damaging the transmission lines,the snow also knocked down electric poles and lines in several areas disrupting power supply.
A MeT official told media that 23 centimetre snow was recorded in Banihal, 31 cm in Kokernag, 24 cm in Pahalgam. All the districts received light to heavy snowfall.A few centimeters of snow was also witnessed in Srinagar.
People are also facing a shortage of water in several areas.
Due to the suspension of road traffic, hundreds of people were stranded on the Highway.Cancellation of flights also left several people stuck at the airport.
