Saudi - Israel Military Alliance: Beating the War Drums Against Hezbollah and Iran

The events that were unfolding in Saudi Arabia in recent weeks point towards a new regional gamble.

Blaming Israel for trying to open a new war front in the region, the Lebanon has warned Tel Aviv against engaging in any such military misadventure. The recent warning comes after Israel and Saudi Arabia’s sabre-rattling against Hezbollah and Iran, forming a new military alliance that has opened up the fears of an impending war.

In a recent interview published by Elaph on Thursday, Lieutenant-General Gadi Eisenkot, Israel’s army chief of staff had said that Israel is ready to share intelligence information to face the "threat" posed by Tehran.

According to sources, the military alliance between Israel and the Saudi Kingdom was long cooking, and the statement by General Eisenkot has now made it official. The events that were unfolding in Saudi Arabia in recent weeks point towards a new regional gamble. The resignation of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri in Saudi Capital and the ‘corruption’ crackdown on Saudi royal members of King Abdullah's lineage seems to be related to this move to tackle Hezbollah.

Saudis and Israel are both involved in the war in Syria and Yemen and have involved together in covert alliances in both the countries. According to experts, for both the countries Syria and Yemen are battlegrounds to counter the influence of Iran in the region, but it seems they have considerably failed to do so. Hezbollah in Lebanon is the new front on which both the Saudi kingdom and Israel are eyeing to defeat their arch-enemy - Iran.

In a recent internal Saudi memorandum leaked to the Lebanese paper, Al-Akhbar alleges the ‘plot’ where the Saudis are ready to give up on the Palestinian right of return. They forfeit Palestinian sovereignty over Jerusalem and no longer insist on the status of a full state for the Palestinians. In return, they ask for a U.S.-Saudi-Israeli (military) alliance against their perceived enemy on the eastern side of the Persian Gulf. The authenticity of the memo has not been confirmed yet.

It is interesting to note that Tel Aviv and Riyadh do not officially have diplomatic ties with each another.

Meanwhile, on Friday, Lebanon’s Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil said that there is currently an anti-Lebanon campaign in the Middle East. "Some countries are trying to use certain forces to remove the head of Lebanon," he claimed, without specifying which ones. In his interview with RT, Bassil said that what the whole world is witnessing today in the region is "yet another attempt to create hotbeds of chaos and instability, which in turn lead to terrorism.”

He warned that any potential aggressor state would suffer consequences, which could reach as far as Europe.
