On February 20, Admiral (retd) L Ramdas, a Magsaysay Awardee for peace and the former chief of the Naval staff, wrote an open letter to President Ram Nath Kovind, following the tragic attack on CRPF personnel in Pulwama that took more than forty lives. In the letter, he expressed his concerns about the unprecedented outbreak of harassment, mob violence, and attacks on Kashmiris across the country.
The retired Admiral also expressed concerns about the fact that the attack happened despite there being intelligence reports about it in possession of the police and intelligence agencies, and reiterated the question that has been asked repeatedly ever since the deadly attack -- how and why a lone vehicle packed with RDX was able to penetrate a convoy.
Admiral Ramdas has urged the President to take some immediate measures to stop the aftermath of the attack from escalating into a hostile situation so big that it might become difficult to contain. He has also requested that President Kovind take steps to stop the terrible media war that is being waged against innocent Kashmiris all over the country, and has requested that India take the high moral ground by declaring an unconditional Hold Fire, so that the facts behind the attack can be genuinely investigated.
President Kovind has not responded to the letter.
