The Story Behind the Belt Road Initiative
On 14th and 15th May, in Beijing, 49 countries met for the One Belt One Road now renamed as the Belt Road Initiative. The implications of this massive project are far reaching. It is being built on the old Silk Route that once connected the entire Eurasian land mass. The Belt is a combination of rail, road and sea corridors and is seen as a set of economic corridors. “One Road” is the “21st Century Maritime Silk Road” and plans to connect China with Southeast Asia, South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. Global trade today is controlled by US and the erstwhile colonial powers – though their control on the ocean and sea routes.
