New Delhi: About 230 writers, intellectuals and eminent people from Assam have called for a silent sit-in protest in Guwahati to express solidarity with the people of Manipur on the occasion of International Human Rights Day on December 10, 2024. The sit-in protest, from 2:00 pm to 3:00 p.m in Guwahati Girls High School Grounds, is to demand the return of peace and normality to the North-Eastern state that has been battered by ethnic violence since May 2023, leading to massive displacement and killings.

A public appeal issued by the eminent citizens and activists has called for larger public unity in the country against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s “misrule” both in Manipur and the Centre.

“Manipur has come to this state only because of the machinations and indifference of the ruling party. There is no guarantee that the tension of Manipur   will not spread to other states in the North East,” said the appeal.

Silent protest
Bring back peace to Manipur
(10 December,2024 between 2-3 pm)
Pub Guwahati Girls High School Grounds (opposite Chandmari Police Station)

Manipur has been burning for a year and a half now. So far, hundreds of people have lost their lives, thousands have fled their homes and are in relief camps for months in indescribable conditions. People in the state are living in uncertain times. But the central government is unconcerned. They do not want to admit that Manipur is in turmoil. They do not want even to discuss Manipur in the Parliament. Till date, the Prime Minister has not visited the state even once.

Manipur is an example of how our country is running. It seems the BJP's only objective is to win elections. They do that by creating division among the opposition parties and through the use of state machinery and money power. The latest instances are Haryana and Maharashtra elections. Everyone thought the results of the Lok Sabha elections would put the BJP on the back foot. But, that has not happened.

The BJP government at the centre is still steamrolling everything backed by Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu.

On the other hand, communal hatred, unprecedented price rise and unemployment problem have caused havoc to the lives of the common people.

Manipur has come to this state only because of the machinations and indifference of the ruling party. There is no guarantee that the tension of Manipur  will not spread to other states in the North East. We think against the misrule of the present dispensation the opposition political parties, civil society and the general public must get united.

Let us all join a silent sit in protest on the occasion of International Human Rights Day on 10 December, 2024 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm to express our solidarity with the people of Manipur and demand  return of peace and normality to the state!
