Surat: On October 18, 2 migrant workers were killed as a blaze erupted in the Viva Packaging Company unit at the Kadodara industrial estate in Surat, Gujarat. Fire tenders rushed to the 5-storey building at Vareli after a distress call around 4:30 AM, Deputy Superintendent Rupal Solanki told ANI.
The fire, which emerged on the first floor, gradually moved above and engulfed the elevated floors. Workers in the two-basement floors were trapped as the fire spread. While one of the migrant workers died due to severe burn injuries trapped in the basement, another lost his life as he attempted to escape from a higher floor.
Firefighting teams from Bardoli reached the spot with 15 fire-tenders, snorkels and lifts. A police officer noted how, despite reaching within minutes of the distress call, the fire was uncontrollable and spread fast. When the operation concluded at noon, about 125 people had been rescued from the packaging unit. Officials are yet to ascertain the cause of the fire.
For the past few days, reports of industrial units catching fire have been frequent. On October 10, a fire broke out at a chair-manufacturing unit in Bengaluru. Then, on October 14, a massive inferno engulfed a suitcase manufacturing unit in northwest Delhi. Luckily, no one was injured in both instances.
