Bhopal: A social media and RTI activist of Madhya Pradesh, who was critical of the Bharatiaya Janata Party (BJP) government’s policies and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media platforms, has been arrested by the Delhi Cyber police on the night of January 22, 2019 from Bhopal.

The activist was identified as Abhishek Mishra (32), a resident of Chattarpur, and runs a social media service company in Bhopal. He has been living with his family in Bhopal’s Koh-e-Fiza area from last couple of years.

According to the press note issued by the office of Public Relations Department on Wednesday, Mishra was arrested by Praveen Kumar of Delhi Police, Cyber Crime Unit’s Special Team, from his home in Koh-e-Fiza on January 22 at 8:30 pm.

A day after the arrest, when Mishra family members failed to trace him, they lodged a missing report to Bhopal police. Following the investigation, police found that a team of Delhi Cyber Police had arrested him. The local police claimed that the Delhi police had neither informed their counterparts in the state, nor Mishra’s kin.

According to the sources, he was arrested on a complaint by a Delhi-based woman for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. The Delhi police nabbed Mishra without informing the Madhya Pradesh police.

Mishra has 63.4 K followers on Twitter, more than 40 K followers on Facebook, and 30 K subscribers on YouTube. On his Twitter and Facebook profile, he has claimed to be News/ Media personality and an RTI Activist.

Via Facebook posts, tweets and YouTube videos, Mishra seems to be critical of the NDA government’s policies, RSS leaders and BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the prevailing chaos in the country. Besides, he seems to be close with the Congress leaders, as he has photos with the senior Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath.

The arrest of Mishra has triggered a rift between the Madhya Pradesh government and Delhi police.

Demanding action against the Cyber police inspector, Madhya Pradesh Home Department on Wednesday dashed off a letter to the Delhi police commissioner for violating the arrest guidelines led down by the Supreme Court. As per the guideline, police from any other state has to inform the local police as well as family members of the accused before making an arrest.

The Home Department also sought information about the charges slapped on the activist.
