Preserving Rohingya Heritage: Fight to Pass on the Language
The Rohingya language was primarily oral until the 1980s, and the spoken word passed on its rich literary history. Known as the Rohingya Hanafi language system, Mohammad Hanif introduced the script in 1980. It soon assumed importance as a vital tool in preserving and promoting the language. Maulvi Ismail is one refugee fighting against the odds to pass on the Rohingya language to the younger generations in exile. Ismail teaches children in a refugee camp in Faridabad, adjacent to India's capital, New Delhi.
