South Africa Cricket Team's Slump vs India and the Big Rot Back Home

Newsclick sports editor Leslie Xavier interviews South African cricket writer Niren Tolsi on the structural, systemic and administrative issues plaguing the game in his country; issues that led to a dismal World Cup and a disastrous India tour.

The Indian cricket team crushed South Africa by an innings and 202 runs in the final Test to complete a 3-0 clean sweep of the Test series. This is the first time India have whitewashed South Africa in a bilateral series. After a dismal ICC World Cup earlier this year, the loss is a clear indication of how far the side has fallen. South African journalist Niren Tolsi sat with the Newsclick sports desk to discuss the rot in South Africa's cricketing system and the structural, systemic and administrative issues in the country -- which cut across sports -- that have led to the current state of affairs. Tolsi shared his observations on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) elections, drawing parallels with the similar powerplays in Cricket South Africa. Finally, we spoke about how Sourav Ganguly might approach India's relationship with the International Cricket Council (ICC), in the context of revenue sharing specifically, and what impact this could have on smaller cricket nations such as South Africa.
