Students Beaten Up for Demanding Justice for Kathua Rape Victim in Delhi

JNUSU Vice President was assaulted inside the police station after protesters were detained in a protest against the alleged brutal rape and murder of the 8 year old.

Delhi Police, on Monday, lathi-charged and detained protesters who had gathered at New Delhi’s Jammu and Kashmir Bhawan demanding justice for Kathua rape victim. The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union had given a protest call against the alleged rape and murder of 8-year-old girl, belonging to a nomadic tribe in Kathua district in Jammu and Kashmir.

 The students demanded the suspension of the Senior Superintended of Police and the culprit be brought to justice.     

Protesters were detained at Tughlak Road police station.

JNUSU Vice President Simon Zoya Khan was allegedly assaulted inside the police station. “When I went to ask for water, a female police officer dragged me inside the room in the police station, who then punched me on my face and abused me,” said Zoya Khan speaking to Newsclick.

According to reports, police allegedly targeted Kashmiri students who were part of the protests and also hurled abused against protesters.

JNUSU in a statement condemning the police lathi-charge on students and attack on Simone Zoya Khan said, “be it Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, UP were BJP is in power the police through its actions has failed to investigate and provide justice for the victims.”

“Today Delhi Police failed in itself by dragging, kicking and abusing peacefully protesting students for justice for Asfia showing their true Patriarchal and anti-women stance.”
