TN This Week: Special Assembly Session Held After Governor Returns 10 Pending Bills

The Tamil Nadu government on Friday apprised the Madras High Court of the status of disciplinary action initiated against the former Collector of Thoothukudi and others in connection with the police firing on May 22, 2018, in which 13 anti-Sterlite protesters were killed.
As per a resolution passed by the Finance Committee and the decision of the University Syndicate of Anna University in Chennai, the test and related fees for engineering students from Tamil Nadu have been increased by about 50%.
The Madras High Court on Thursday reserved the order in the appeal filed by O Panneerselvam challenging the interim order of a single judge restraining him from using the AIADMK flag, symbol, and letterhead, besides claiming to be the coordinator of the party. Read more

Retired justice of the Madras High Court, K Chandra, who was appointed by the Tamil Nadu government to study ways to improve the functioning of homes for children in conflict with the law, submitted his report on Tuesday. He recommended the enactment of a law to administer all such government homes.
Heavy rains lashed the coastal and interior districts of Tamil Nadu this week. The rains did not cause major damage; however, water stagnation was reported in Chennai and other districts.

SPECIAL SESSION ON RETURNED BILLS
Days after the Supreme Court expressed ‘serious concern’ over governors’ inaction on Bills, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi returned 10 pending Bills to the Assembly on Thursday.
The state Assembly speaker called for a special session on Saturday to discuss the returned bills. A resolution moved by CM Stalin said, “This Assembly feels that withholding of assent by the governor to the Bills and returning it without giving any reasons is not acceptable.”
AIADMK general secretary and Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami on Saturday questioned the need to convene a special session when the state government was already fighting a case on the issue in the Supreme Court.
BJP MLAs staged a walkout from the Assembly session, disapproving the Bills and condemning legislators’ speeches lambasting Governor RN Ravi.
