PROTESTS FOR CAUVERY WATER

The Supreme Court on Thursday declined to intervene in the order issued by the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) instructing the state of Karnataka to release 5,000 cusecs of water at Biligundlu for a 15-day duration from September 13 to 27. The Tamil Nadu government approached the Supreme Court on August 14, seeking intervention to compel Karnataka to release 24,000 cusecs of water from its reservoirs.

Farmers in Trichy, Tiruvarur and other districts held protests on Tuesday as they sought the release of Cauvery River water from neighbouring Karnataka to save the standing kuruvai crops.

FOOD POISONING

At least 26 workers allegedly fell sick after eating chicken and rice at a hotel in the Krishnagiri district. The food safety department also raided the hotel but it later turned out that the food was reportedly not contaminated.

A 14-year-old girl in Tamil Nadu’s Namakkal district died Monday and 43 people were hospitalised after reportedly eating shawarma and other food items from an eatery over the weekend.

ON SANATANA DHARMA

The Supreme Court on Friday sought responses from the Tamil Nadu government and Udhayanidhi Stalin, the state minister for youth welfare and sports development and son of the chief minister, to a petition that sought the registration of an FIR against Udhayanidhi for his comments that ‘Sanatan Dharma’ must be eradicated.

Udhayanidhi Stalin on Wednesday gave another remark attacking Sanata Dharma, saying that President Droupadi Murmu was not invited to the inauguration of the new Parliament building because she was a widow and belonged to the tribal community.
