Universities: Crushing Dissent, Equity & Public Funding
A number of civil society groups and activists came together to organise two day conclave on the theme 'Idea of India’ at New Delhi’s India International Centre on 23rd and 24th May, 2016. Newsclick brings to you the session on the shrinking democratic spaces and cut in funding of the education institutions. The panel included JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar, Vice President Shehla Rashid, Secretary Rama Naga, Umar Khalid and Chintu Kumari. Kanhaiya Kumar talked about how the current regime is bent on curbing the voices of dissent because it is afraid of the questions being raised on the fund cut. He stressed on the fact that the current regime is threatened by the ability to reason and hence is trying it’s best to stop it. Other speakers raised several important issues like that of Rohith Vemula, the assault on students, teachers, budget cuts and violence faced by students in the university campuses.
