The Tiruppur banian industry -- also known as Banian City, or the Cotton City or the Knitwear Capital of India -- has been in crisis for the past few years due to rising yarn prices. The street banian industry is now dying out. According to the stakeholders of the industry, it is because of the wrong economic policies of the Union government. They argue that the industry can be saved by making the Tamil Nadu Cotton Corporation in the public sector since it has the authority to control the price of cotton in the state.
